About the artwork

This drawing came about during lockdown where I spent most of the summer watching the Waratah’s bloom on Kunanyi in Hobart. It was drawn in pencil and delicately rendered to showcase its intricate spidery petals, which I was completely mesmerised by! A Little pygmy possum is perched beside it giving an indication of their size and scale.

Tasmanian Waratah (Telopea truncata, Western form)

Tasmanian waratahs are from the Proteaceae family and are endemic to Tasmania. Although they are smaller than their more popular mainland NSW cousins, they have an unkempt, gangly appearance and these Gondwana relics flourish in alpine Eucalypt forests, rainforests and sub-alpine woodlands thriving at elevations of 600 to 1200 meters (2000 - 4000 ft).

Tasmanian Pygmy Possum (cercatetus lepidus)

Weighing less than a golf ball, the world’s smallest possum can mainly be found in Tasmania, but have been known to live in north-western Victoria, Kangaroo Island, and eastern Southern Australia. They are nocturnal marsupials that feed on insects, nectar and pollen of flowering plants and live in tree hollows in sclerophyll forests and open heathlands. Climate change, loss of habitat and feral predators present the most threats to the little possum.
