About this piece…

Copperleaf Snowberry

Also known as Tasmanian Snowberry, this endemic species of plant native to Tasmania is known for its lustrous white and pink star shaped berries, which dance amidst a bouquet of iridescent blue and rust-tinted leaves. In Spring and early Summer it produces delicate urn-shaped flowers. By Autumn, white berries (which are edible) glow vibrantly against the verdant backdrop of the wet forests and alpine woodlands in which it thrives.

Process + medium

Before painting, I sketch out the plant from life. This specimen was taken from my walk one morning, atop Mt Field National Park in Lutriwita, Tasmania in late May. I take my own reference photos and paint the rest in my studio.

Using premium grade Chinese ink on paper, I hand grind the ink sticks myself using an ink stone. This traditional method of preparing ink alone can take several minutes and forms the start of my painting process. What I am left with are only the most intense colours and highest quality pigments.

The artwork is professionally scanned in Melbourne and printed in my home studio using archival inks on acid free Hahnemühle paper.
